Tyne Design Week opened with an inspiring event bringing together leaders from education, industry, and the public sector across the North East. Our highlights included NICA’s Redesigning Infuriating Objects, which explored the design challenges of aging and Rob Law’s session that highlighted how empathy and resilience drive successful, international brands.
Tuesday
24/06/25
Tuesday marked the start of our open studio sessions giving visitors an exclusive look at a wide range of creative spaces, including creative media, urban design and architecture. In the afternoon, participants collaborated on design challenges focused on improving sleep and tackling child poverty. The day ended with a documentary screening and Q&A highlighting the journey of a local disabled surfer.
Wednesday
25/06/25
The morning featured began with “Designing a Just Transition to Net Zero” in partnership with Rise and Design alongside visits to the Rural Design Centre. Afternoon sessions focused on AI powered optimisation, how craft can support addiction recovery, and emerging talents in architecture. The day ended with an relaxed evening gathering, where attendees shared stories, laughter, and built meaningful connections.
Thursday
26/06/25
The day began with opportunities to explore architecture and planning futures, digital service design and strategic design. Afternoon sessions covered how we can protect creative work, improving public transport experiences, and designing for engineering efficiency. The day ended with a celebration of the week featuring food and entertainment with a view of the iconic River Tyne.
Friday
27/06/25
The final day highlighted the journeys of creative studios based at the Northern Design Centre, from filming in the Arctic to crafting impactful marketing content. In the afternoon, attendees explored the impressive work of students at Newcastle College, celebrating the talent and innovation shaping the region’s creative community.
